Hugo Kamishi Natural Quartz Sand
This fine graded sand ranges from 0.5-1mm in diameter The colour is white/grey Sand can look very nice in an aquarium and it is better for fish that dig or forage in substrates. Catfish, gobies, soles, spiny eels, and cichlids are all examples of fish that manipulate the substrate. With sand, these fish can dig or ‘earth-eat’ without any risk or damage. Gravel wears down the barbels of catfish, and with spiny eels especially, skin wounds become a site for bacterial infections. Sand is mandatory for spiny eels and ‘freshwater’ soles/flatfish. The particle size of sand works better for smaller fish Plants root very well in sand Do not use sand with an undergravel filter Sand is much cleaner than gravel as the space between gravel pieces is big enough to allow debris in Hugo Fact “It is estimated that there may still be over 15,000 fish species that have not yet been identified” Hugo say… “sand makes for sunny times”

Hugo Kamishi Black Glass Gravel
Hugo Kamishi Black glass gravel is a shiny, fine black gravel which would compliment any aquarium. We are asked about the amount of gravel we recommend for fish tanks – this is quite a hard one to answer as it depends on many factors , ie is it a fish or planted aquarium etc . You also need to consider that it is the volume of gravel and not the weight you need to bear in mind i.e some gravels are heavier than others . A normal depth of gravel would be 5cm as an average. Perhaps the most important function that gravel serves is to provide a home for beneficial bacteria. Those bacterial colonies are necessary to eliminate waste produced by the fish, leftover food, and plant debris in the aquarium. If the bacteria don’t have a comfy gravel bed to live in they will find other places, but may not grow in sufficient quantities to keep the aquarium safe for your fish. If the tank is left with a bare bottom, it will be necessary to change the water more often in the aquarium to keep harmful wastes from building up. In the event the tank is heavily stocked, even frequent water changes may not be enough to keep ammonia and nitrites at bay. Occasionally there are situations in which substrate isn’t necessary, or even desirable. The primary one is in a grow-out tank that is used to hatch eggs and raise young fry. Grow out aquariums must be kept scrupulously clean, and require frequent water changes as well as prompt vacuuming away of waste and uneaten foods.

Hugo Kamishi Quartz White Gravel 1mm
Hugo Kamishi Quartz white gravel 1mm ( approximate guideline) is a quartz based gravel which looks stunning in aquariums . A Fine extra white grade of between 0.8-1.2mm Hugo Say – When it comes to the diameter of the stones, there is a wide selection to choose from. As a rule, the faster the water flows within the habitat, the larger the size of grain you can use. This also helps to support good root formation for larger plants. You will also need to give some thought to the types of fish that will live in your tank. If you have bottom feeding fish, you will definitely need to choose rounded gravel so that your pets don’t injure themselves on any sharp edges. Once you have found the right kind of quartz gravel, you should rinse it thoroughly in cold water before putting it into the tank. As an alternative to quartz gravel, you could use quartz sand, which is also available in a variety of colours. It’s perfect for fish that like to burrow and is pretty much a must for most types of catfish and angelfish. That said, using sand will theoretically limit the selection of plants you can use, as not all plants will find enough stability in such a loose substrate. You can counterbalance this potential drawback by adding larger stones around the plants to protect them. Substrates vary widely in terms of particle size – everything from sands consisting of very tiny particles to larger river rocks. Large particle substrates allow more uneaten food and waste to penetrate into it leading to toxic build ups if not cleaned. Small particle substrates can compact which may lead to areas that lack oxygen. These areas can eventually release hydrogen sulfide – a substance that is extremely toxic to fish. The size of the particles also has a big impact on the health of the fish and the ease of cleaning. For instance, some fish like to scoop the substrate in their mouth and move it around. It is not a good idea to mix these species with sand because the small particles can irritate them. Sand can also be somewhat difficult to clean as the small particles often get vacuumed out of the tank along with the waste. On the other hand, some fish enjoy making nests or homes out of the substrate and in these instances, large particle sizes would not be conducive to this habit. As you can see, it is important to research the specific needs of your fish when considering the appropriate particle size. The most important function that gravel serves is to provide a home for beneficial bacteria.

A bare-bottomed tank makes it far easier to spot small fry, and thus avoid them when cleaning the aquarium Hospital tanks also may not have substrate, which can harbor parasites that can linger there and infect the next inhabitant. A bare-bottomed tank is a good way to avoid that possibility. For the same reason, some owners choose to leave any quarantine tanks bare-bottomed as well. Hugo Say “Why wait to forgive and let go only after you have sufficiently wallowed in your despair? Why not forgive and let go now?”
